Nightmare Effects of Sugar Addiction

Cutting your addiction to sugar is worse than quitting smoking. Really! Smoking is something that you can cut out of your life and never think about again, but it’s not really the same with sugar.

Sugar is all around us all day long and we’ve been taught to like it since we were children. Our bodies crave it and the craving increases as we eat more of it. And it causes a myriad of health issues including Type II Diabetes, obesity, gall stones, arthritis, and heart disease.

Sugar is so highly addictive that, despite all of the health problems it causes, we continue to consume more and more of it every year. It is full of empty calories and in order to process it, the body is forced to use its own supply of vitamins and minerals, depleting those stores and increasing the risk of obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Another disturbing fact about sugar is that we consume an average of 73 grams of it per day compared to 15 at the turn of the century … 114 years ago! This is a dramatic increase that our bodies had no time to prepare for.

In addition, the sugar is not sucrose, a form that has been used by our bodies for millennia, but High Fructose Corn Syrup or HFCS. This form of sugar is metabolized much differently than glucose, the form of sugar that our body actually uses. It contains sucrose and fructose but is risky because of its chemical combination of sugars.

In regular table sugar, the fructose portion is bound to the sucrose and the body must break that down before it can be used. In HFCS, the fructose is not bound to the other sugars and it is absorbed immediately and goes right to your liver … and thighs!

An especially destructive effect of excessive sugar consumption is that it is self-sustaining. As you eat more sugar, your body becomes more adept at processing it. You can absorb more, therefore causing more damage. As we consume more sugar, and our bodies demand even more, we open ourselves up to some awful affects such as:

  • Weight gain, obesity, and Type II Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Insulin resistance
  • Increased Uric Acid
  • Kidney damage

All of the above are bad, but an especially nasty effect is the increase in uric acid. The increase is responsible for stroke, hypertension, heart disease, and inflammation. These symptoms of increased uric acid are bad, but they also lead to other diseases such as cancer.

It is very important to strictly limit sugar intake, especially HFCS’s, because it will inevitably lead to deadly diseases that are completely avoidable.

The Medifast Weight Control Program is able to keep meals tasty while limiting the simple sugars involved. This decreases the potential for side effects, while allowing weight loss at the same time!
