One of the most important principles behind the Medifast Weight Loss Program is eating fewer calories than what the body consumes. However, this does not mean that you need to spend all your days counting calories, as Medifast has already done that work for you. They supply you with Medifast products that are tasty, filling and ensure you will not go over the number of calories required to lose weight.
5 Medifast meals per day
Those on the 5 & 1 Medifast program need to eat 6 meals per day in order to supply the body with everything it needs while enhancing metabolism. From the 6 mandatory meals, 5 are provided by Medifast meals. There are over 80 from which to choose!
These meals include shakes, puddings, soups, bars and other similar products that only need water to be added. They are portioned so they do not go over the allowed number of calories, so there is no extra calorie counting involved.
The lean and green meal
While most of your body needs will be covered by the Medifast meals, the program allots for you to cook one meal on your own. This is the so called lean and green meal, where you are allowed certain combinations of lean meat, an important source of protein and some vegetables.
Around 5-7 ounces of lean meat are allowed for this daily meal. Fish is, of course, an option, and, in the case of choosing the leanest options, you can also add some healthy fats. It is recommended to grill, bake, boil, or pouch the meat in order to keep it healthy and maintain its flavor.
Vegetables are allowed on the side, and they can be consumed raw, grilled, baked or steamed, depending on your preference. However, there are some restrictions when it comes to the type of vegetables you can eat. For instance, all those rich in carbs such as potatoes, carrots, onions, corn or peas, should be excluded.
What to avoid
Alcohol should not be consumed while on the Medifast program, and you should also stay away from sugary treats. The Medifast dessert selections are very tasty, so they will satisfy your sweet tooth. As far as sugar-free drinks are concerned, you are allowed to have them up to a certain amount. Make sure to limit the consumption of caffeine, as the program may make you more sensitive to its effects.
